What is Mebendazole?

Mebendazole or MBZ (marketed as Vermox) is used to treat infections caused by worms such as roundworms/nematodes, whipworms, hookworms, and pinworms.

Mebendazole Pharmacological action

Vermox Mebendazole is anthelmintic medicine for a broad spectrum of action, the most effective when enterobiasis and trichocephalosis. Causing irreversible disruption of glucose utilization, depletes the glycogen reserves in the tissues of worms, preventing the synthesis of cellular tubulin and inhibiting the synthesis of Adenosine triphosphate.

Mebendazole Pharmacokinetics

Vermox Mebendazole is practically not absorbed in the intestine. Halflife – 2.5-5.5 hours. Connection with plasma proteins – 90%. Mebendazole is unevenly distributed on the bodies accumulated in adipose tissue, liver, larvae of helminths. In the liver, Mebendazole tablet is metabolized to a 2-amino derivative. More than 90% of the Mebendazole dose is excreted in the faecal mass unchanged. The absorbed portion (5-10%) is removed by the kidneys.

Mebendazole Indications

Roundworm, whipworm, pinworm, hookworm, helminthiasis, strongyloidiasis, trichocephalosis, trichinosis, teniasis, echinococcosis, multiple nematode, alveococcosis, mixed helminthiasis.

Mebendazole Contraindications

Hypersensitivity, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, hepatic failure, children’s age (up to 2 years), pregnancy, lactation period.

Mebendazole Dosage

Vermox Mebendazole tablet should be taken inside with a small amount of water. Adults and children over 10 years who suffer from enterobiasis, should take once at 100 mg of Mebendazole. Children aged from 2 to 10 years – only once, at 25-50 mg. In the case of a high probability of re-invasion, Mebendazole should be taken again after 2-4 weeks in the same dose. It is recommended to organize treatment with Mebendazole tablets for all family members. If you have diagnoses such as ascariasis, trichocephalosis, hookworm, teniasis, strongyloidiasis, and mixed helminthiases – in the morning and evening should be taken the dose of tablet at 100 mg for 3 days. When Trichinellosis – 3 times a day at 200-400 mg of Mebendazole for 3 days, and from 4 to 10 days – 3 times at 400-500 mg. When echinococcosis, in the first 3 days – 500 mg 2 times a day, for the next 3-day dose is increased to 500 mg 3 times daily; further dose is increased to the maximum (at the rate of 25-30 mg/kg/day) and is taken in 3-4 divided doses.

Mebendazole Side effects

Dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain. When mebendazole Vermox is used in high doses for a long time: vomiting, diarrhea, headache, allergic reaction (rash, urticaria, angioedema), increased activity of “liver” enzymes, hypercreatininemia, leukopenia, anemia, eosinophilia, hair loss, hematuria, cylindruria. It may harm the embryo’s development.

Overdose

  • Symptoms

Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. When Mebendazole tablets are used in high doses for a long time: reversible dysfunction of the liver, hepatitis, neutropenia.

  • Treatment

You must remove the Mebendazole drug from the stomach, causing vomiting or gastric lavage, activated charcoal method.

Mebendazole Cautions

During long-term ingestion of Vermox, it’s necessary to control the peripheral blood picture, liver and kidney function. Within days after taking it’s prohibited to use ethanol, fatty foods, any laxative. Necessarily periodic examination of smears of the anal region and the feces after treatment: therapy is effective in the absence of helminths or their eggs for 7 days.

Mebendazole Interaction

Mebendazole reduces the need for insulin in patients who suffer from diabetes. Avoid joint appointments with lipophilic substances. Cimetidine may increase the concentration in the blood; carbamazepine and other inducers of metabolism – may decrease it.
